Document Details : Title: Comites undecim Subtitle: Sifting the County Interpolations of the Suevic Parochiale Author(s): FERNÁNDEZ CALO, Martín Journal: Latomus Volume: 82 Issue: 3 Date: 2023 Pages: 503-531 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.82.3.3292429 Abstract : The ‘Suevic Parochiale’ is a crucial ecclesiastical text from 6th century Galicia. Despite its recognised authority, it contains numerous interpolations that remain to be critically analised and explained. The ‘county interpolations’ are among them, constituting a set of additions to an obscure passage in the text, the ‘adiacentia clause’, which attributes eleven counts (comites undecim) to the bishopric of Lugo. This article shows that the county interpolations are clearly of high medieval origin, while the adiacentia clause is mainly original. The only exception is the number of counts, which coincides with a high medieval ecclesiastical controversy, the ‘Oviedo exchange’, which affected eleven local districs in the vicinity of Lugo. This allows us to refine the critical reading of the document, as well as to document the existence of counts in Suevic Galicia. |
