Bordewijk (1884-1965) is regarded one of the most important Dutch prose authors of the twentieth century. An intriguing question rising from his vast prose work – published between 1919 and 1964 – is what seems to be, all of a sudden, a radical turnaround at the age of 46. While his prose debut was traditional in the genre of fantastic short stories (Fantastische vertellingen), he published from 1931 onwards more experimental short novels, starting with Blokken. Since the strategic dimension of this move has been neglected so far, a field-theoretical approach will be used to gain a better explanation for Bordewijk’s change of style and form. His prose, his interviews and his literary criticism will be analysed as positionings that will be contextualised within the Dutch literary field of the interbellum period. |
