Here we present the first full English translation of B 199, a Tocharian B commentary on the Abhidharmadīpa, along with detailed notes on linguistic, philological, and Buddhological issues. The passage preserved in this manuscript concerns the 80,000 divisions of the Dharma (dharmaskandha), a term referring to the various discourses of the Buddha, and the related problem of the intrinsic nature of the Buddha’s teaching (buddhavacana). After providing an overview of recent research on manuscripts of the Abhidharmadīpa, we discuss the concept of the divisions of the Dharma itself and offer some insights into the different ways in which this concept surfaces in the Buddhist literature. The main body of the article treats the linguistic and paleographic features of the Tocharian manuscript and provides a transcription, translation, and notes on the text. In addition to restoring the missing portions of the manuscript, we discuss issues such as copyist errors, the unique allative plural ending in -aiṣ, gender agreement, and methods of adapting Sanskrit loans into Tocharian. An appendix provides relevant passages from the Abhidharmakośa and the Abhidharmakośavyākhyā as an aid to understanding the passage from the Abhidharmadīpa. Cet article est le troisième volet de notre série d’études philologiques sur les textes de l’Abhidharma tokharien et fait suite à nos récentes études des manuscrits B 197 et A 384-386. Nous présentons ici la première traduction anglaise complète de B 199, un commentaire en tokharien B sur l’Abhidharmadīpa, accompagné de notes détaillées sur des problèmes d’ordre linguistique, philologique et bouddhologique. Le passage conservé dans ce manuscrit concerne les 80000 sections du Dharma (dharmaskandha), un terme désignant les différents discours du Bouddha, et le problème connexe de la nature intrinsèque de l’enseignement du Bouddha (buddhavacana). Après avoir donné un aperçu des recherches récentes sur les manuscrits de l’Abhidharmadīpa, nous discutons du concept des sections du Dharma lui-même et offrons quelques perspectives sur les façons dont ce concept est présenté dans la littérature bouddhique. Le corps de l’article traite des caractéristiques linguistiques et paléographiques du manuscrit tokharien et offre une transcription ainsi qu’une traduction annotée du texte. Outre la restauration des parties manquantes du manuscrit, nous abordons des sujets tels que les erreurs de copiste, la terminaison unique du pluriel allatif en -aiṣ, l’accord en genre et les façons dont sont adaptés les emprunts sanskrits en tokharien. Nous proposons en appendice une traduction des passages correspondants dans l’Abhidharmakośa et l’Abhidharmakośavyākhyā pour aider à la compréhension de l’Abhidharmadīpa. |
