Tuvan and its related dialects/languages can be collectively referred to as the so-called 'Sayan-Turkic'. They are broadly divided into two groups: (A) the languages of the steppe region and (B) the languages of the taiga region. The Tuvans live mainly in the Tuva Republic of the Russian Federation. They also inhabit neighboring Mongolia and northern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China. One of the characteristics of the South Siberian Turkic languages is the lack of the privative suffix -sIz. So far only the metathetic form of ögsüz is known as a word with the suffix -sIz in 'Sayan Turkic'. Through this study dealing with data obtained from the field studies conducted by the Altaic Society of Korea in 2005 and 2006, it was revealed that another word with -sIs (< -sIz), ǰüreksis (or ǰureksis), is used at least in Dukha and Uriankhai. This word was derived from the previous active use of the suffix -sIz and has been used ever since. |
