Document Details : Title: John Argyropoulos's Paramythetikos to Emperor Constantine XI Dragaš Palaiologos upon the Death of his Mother Empress Helena Palaiologina Author(s): NIKOLIĆ, Maja Journal: Revue des Études Byzantines Volume: 81 Date: 2023 Pages: 223-235 DOI: 10.2143/REB.81.0.3292141 Abstract : John Argyropoulos’s Paramythetikos to Constantine XI Palaiologos on his mother Helena Palaiologina’s death (1450) is almost entirely a copy of his Paramythetikos dedicated to the emperor on the occasion of the death of his brother, Emperor John VIII Palaiologos (1448). The latter, it seems, was never read publically, due to the very complicated political situation in Constantinople caused by the deep conflict between the supporters and the opponents of the union of the Churches. The Paramythetikos of 1450, however, stressing the political influence of the late empress, bore an important political message and invited Emperor Constantine to accept the union with the Roman Church in order to obtain Western help against the Ottomans, thus following the same political line that his mother had supported. Le Paramythètikos adressé par Jean Argyropoulos à Constantin XI Palaiologos à la mort de sa mère Hélène Palaiologina (1450) est presque entièrement la copie de son Paramythètikos dédié à l’empereur à l’occasion de la mort de son frère, l’empereur Jean VIII Palaiologos (1448). Ce texte n’a, semble-t-il, jamais été lu publiquement, en raison de la situation politique très compliquée provoquée par le conflit profond entre les partisans et les opposants à l’union des Églises à Constantinople. Le Paramythètikos de 1450 mettait cependant en lumière l’influence politique de la défunte impératrice et portait un message politique important invitant l’empereur Constantin à accepter l’union avec l’Église romaine afin d’obtenir l’aide de l’Occident contre les Ottomans, selon la même ligne politique que celle que sa mère avait soutenue. |
