Document Details : Title: 'I Advised You Like a Brother' Subtitle: Functive, Associative, Similative in Sahidic Coptic Author(s): SPERANSKY, Nina Journal: Journal of Coptic Studies Volume: 25 Date: 2023 Pages: 241-255 DOI: 10.2143/JCS.25.0.3292063 Abstract : The paper argues that the two Coptic (Sahidic) comparison markers, ϩⲱⲥ and ⲛⲑⲉ ⲛ-, are functionally and semantically distinct. Whereas ⲛⲑⲉ ⲛ- is used in similative constructions, ϩⲱⲥ establishes a secondary subject-predicate relation between the comparee and the standard (vehicle noun). Proposing the semantic classification of secondary predicates based on Nichols, Valli, and Creissels, the paper explores the semantic scope of Coptic ϩⲱⲥ-construction and specifies the syntactic and semantic properties of the vehicle noun that distinguish the secondary predicate construction from the similative one. |
