Document Details : Title: Notes on the Survey of the Submerged Remains of Phanagoria in the Taman Peninsula, 1998 Author(s): BRANDON, C. , TSETSKHLADZE, G.R. Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 1 Issue: 1 Date: 2002 Pages: 178-187 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.1.1.3292050 Abstract : The Greek colony of Phanagoria, situated on the Taman Peninsula in South Russia, was established in about 542 BC by Teos. As a result of the rising sea-level (about 4 m) part of it is submerged under the modern-day Gulf of Taman. This note presents the preliminary results of an underwater survey conducted by the Nautical Archaeology Society and the University of London Phanagoria Project. Most probably, the remains surveyed are those of a temple of the end of the 6th-beginning of the 5th century BC. |
