Document Details : Title: The Date of Amage, Queen of the Sarmatians Subtitle: A Note on Polyaenus, Strategemata 8.56 Author(s): BURSTEIN, Stanley M. Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 1 Issue: 1 Date: 2002 Pages: 173-177 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.1.1.3292049 Abstract : The textual sources for the history of Chersonesus are few and often lack clear indications concerning the date and historical context of the events described in them. Historians have tried to use archaeological evidence to date such events by trying to identify archaeological contexts in which they 'seem to fit'. The purpose of this note is to show that the currently accepted mid-2nd century BC date of one such archaeologically dated event – the intervention of Amage, queen of the Sarmatians, on behalf of Chersonesus against the Scythians – is not supported by the text of Polyaenus. |
