Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 1 Issue: 1 Date: 2002 Pages: 124-140 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.1.1.3292046 Abstract : A recent examination of archaeological sites in the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan, Republic of Azerbaijan, in June 2001, prompted a reexamination of some outstanding problems in the historical geography of this little-known region. The toponyms Arsini/Arsinea and Ania, mentioned in an Urartian inscription discovered at Ilandag in Nakhchivan in 1988, are considered. An identification is suggested for the fortress of Olanê mentioned by Strabo (11.14.6). Sigan, in the great inscription of Shapur I at Naqš-e Rustam (ŠKZ) and Armenian Siwnik' are examined, as are some points in the itineraries of Heraclius during his campaigns against the Sasanians in the AD 620s. |
