Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 1 Issue: 1 Date: 2002 Pages: 67-86 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.1.1.3292043 Abstract : This contribution aims to present a coherent interpretation of the Luwian hieroglyphic inscriptions on the Emirgazi stone altars, based on the transliteration as established by John David Hawkins in an appendix to his edition of the Sildburg text (1995). According to this intepretation, the inscriptions, which were written on the initiative of the Hittite great king Tudhaliyas IV (1239-1209 BC), stipulate offering regulations and regulations concerning the use of the sanctuary to which the altar stones once belonged in an astonishingly detailed way. The reader will find himself face to face with a unique document from the Hittite Empire period. |
