The rhetorical questions show a dissuasive/persuasive pattern: dissuading the community members from bringing lawsuits in civil courts against each other and persuading them to judge each other with a new set of values. The wordplay reveals a certain ambivalence that may include both legal cases and daily matters. The shift from bringing a lawsuit against the other (ἕτερος) to judging 'your' brother (ἀδελφός) conveys the change of attitude Paul is fostering in his audience. The coordination of these three rhetorical features determines the force of Paul’s questioning. |
