Document Details : Title: Observations on the Range and Nature of Attic Black and Red Figure Pottery in Israel Subtitle: The Yavneh-Yam Contribution Author(s): KLINGER, Sonia Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 2 Issue: 1 Date: 2003 Pages: 135-145 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.2.1.3291984 Abstract : The recent study of finds of Attic black and red figure pottery from Yavneh-Yam, a harbour half-way between Jaffa and Ashdod, invites a fresh look at the types of Attic black and red figure pottery imports to the region. The typical Attic decorated vases are late black figure and silhouette cup-skyphoi, 5th-century pattern lekythoi and 4th-century red figure kraters. Nevertheless, we now know that other types of shapes too reached the eastern Mediterranean. The evidence presented in this paper reveals the rich, wide range of Attic decorated pottery arriving at Yavneh-Yam and other sites in the region. |
