Document Details : Title: The Tillya Tepe Gold Subtitle: A Closer Look Author(s): BOARDMAN, John Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 2 Issue: 2 Date: 2003 Pages: 348-374 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.2.2.3291957 Abstract : The iconography of the lst-century AD gold finds in the graves at Tillya Tepe (Bactria) are not easy either to observe or interpret, despite exemplary publication by V. Sarianidi (1985), whose observations have been the most meticulous. This article explores mainly the classical subjects and their relationship to other Greek work in the east, as well as subjects which, from their associations with China and the Huns to the east, and with India to the south, reinforce the excavator's deduction that the occupants of the graves were Yueh-chi, proto-Kushans, rather than Saka. |
