Document Details : Title: Ancient Trade in South-Eastern Iberia Subtitle: The Lower Segura River as Focus of Exchange Activities Author(s): ABAD CASAL, Lorenzo , GRAU MIRA, Ignacio , SALA SELLÉS, Feliciana , MORATALIA JÁVEGA, Jesus Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 2 Issue: 2 Date: 2003 Pages: 265-287 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.2.2.3291953 Abstract : This paper focuses on the exchange activities of the Iberian communities of the southeastern region of Spain during the Iron Age (5th-2nd centuries BC). On the basis of archaeological evidence, particularly settlement patterns and the distribution of imported goods, we identify the Iberian sites of El Oral and La Escuera, in the lower Segura valley, as trade centres in the Early and Classical Iberian periods respectively. We suggest that they played a key role as intermediaries between oriental traders and other Iberian peoples in the inland regions of the Iberian Peninsula. |
