Document Details : Title: I monaci basiliani armeni nell'Italia dei comuni (secoli XIII-XIV) Author(s): BONARDI, Claudia Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 41 Date: 2022 Pages: 543-565 DOI: 10.2143/REA.41.0.3291902 Abstract : As evidence of the numerous Armenian monasteries opened in Italy between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, several manuscripts produced in the scriptoria and occasional surviving examples of ecclesiastical buildings have come down to us. Dispersed their archives, local chronicles make sporadic references to them, more often the ecclesiastical histories; bishop and pontifical sources rarely, in questions of ecclesiastical law. However, the known cases of the Basilian monasteries of Genoa and Perugia show that the opening of individual domus was achieved through involved agreements of various stakeholders: Church, civil governors, private citizens. In this paper we propose some insights on the process of intervention carried out by municipal administrations and citizens, while acknowledging having nothing but sparse pieces of evidence, which are often second-hand and sometimes not even verifiable sources. These witnesses are however crucial to assess the strategies of negotiation pursued by those monks when dealing with local communities and governors. |
