Document Details : Title: Interpreting Aristotle and the Bible in Armenia Author(s): SHIRINIAN, Manea Erna Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 41 Date: 2022 Pages: 271-286 DOI: 10.2143/REA.41.0.3291888 Abstract : This article deals with the data concerning the commentaries on Aristotle and the Biblical exegesis or to put in a larger scale: the genre of commentaries in Philosophy and Theology. Testimonies and evidences from Armenian tradition on the announced topic are brought forward from the Greek original of the Commentary on Aristotle’s Categories ascribed to David the Invincible and its Armenian translation from one side and from the so-called Book of Causes from the other side. The latter one is an isagogical textbook or manual of the Introduction to the Bible, which was needed before to start interpreting the books of the Scripture. I tried to show that there is connection in approaches and methods between the interpretation of the Bible and that of Aristotle or, better to say, philosophical treatises and commentaries on them, which are extant in Armenian milieu starting from the fifth century. |
