Document Details : Title: From Fraternity to Fratricide Author(s): YUMUL, Arus Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 41 Date: 2022 Pages: 225-238 DOI: 10.2143/REA.41.0.3291885 Abstract : The Young Turk Revolution of 24 July 1908 and the reestablishment of the 1876 Constitution was followed by a wave of enthusiastic public jubilation throughout the Ottoman lands, as well as in other countries where Ottoman citizens lived either as immigrants or as exiles and political fugitives. Powerful and emotional addresses and scenes of fraternity – especially between Armenians and Turks- that early in the revolution prevailed everywhere, were supplanted by fear, alarm, anxiety, and pessimism only within a period of few months. The spirit of fraternity that was to encompass Muslims and non-Muslims alike was soon superseded by a only Muslim fraternity. |
