Document Details : Title: 'De Iudeis' Subtitle: References to Jews and Judaism in Thomas Ebendorfer's Sentences Commentary Author(s): CURUŢ, Ioana Journal: Recherches de Théologie et Philosophie Médiévales Volume: 90 Issue: 1 Date: 2023 Pages: 111-172 DOI: 10.2143/RTPM.90.1.3291868 Abstract : The present article investigates references to Jews and Judaism in the Sentences commentary composed by Thomas Ebendorfer at a very delicate point in history, i.e., in the years surrounding the ‘Wiener Geserah’ of 1420-1421. The first part discusses M.H. Shank’s claim that Viennese theologians treated topics such as the indemonstrability of the Trinity and the use of Aristotelian logic in Trinitarian theology because they were confronted with a Jewish community that refused to convert to Christianity. The second part considers a hitherto unknown fragment attributed to Henry of Langenstein (ms. Basel, Universitätsbibliothek, A X 44, fol. 116v) that sheds new light on his stance concerning the conversion of Jews. The last part examines Ebendorfer’s thoughts on the issue of forced baptism. Appendix 1 provides an edition of Langenstein’s fragment and Appendix 2 comprises a list of explicit references to Jews and Judaism from Ebendorfer’s Sentences commentary. |
