The main goal is to show that deontic logic can not only serve to formalise moral and theological arguments, but may also constitute a source of theological insight. After providing an overview of the semantic models for deontic logic, the paper considers the question of whether it is possible – and to what extent – to speak of God’s duties. Next, the duties of man as seen through the prism of moral theology are analysed. From these considerations it transpires that the utilisation of deontic logic in moral theology brings to the fore several important issues: the question of truth and falsehood of norms, the problem of conceptualising moral obligation, and the relationship between the natural law and its expression in human (positive) moral and legal systems. |
