The debate on absolute dates during the Iron Age has become confused by the various independent positions taken by scholars from diverse Mediterranean regions. This state of affairs is the main topic addressed. Aspects discussed are the conventional absolute chronology; Carthage and the adjusted absolute chronology for the Phoenician settlements in southern Spain; the dispute on the absolute chronology of the Iron Age in Italy; the low and high chronology debate on the Iron Age in Palestine; radiocarbon and dendrochronological research at Gordion; the revised absolute chronology of Central Europe and ‘Trade before the Flag’, Part II. In the last section some modification is suggested to the absolute chronology of the Greek Geometric fine wares, resulting in a longer trading phase in the Mediterranean before the establishment of Greek settlements in southern Italy during the late 8th century BC. |
