Document Details : Title: The Influence of Progymnastic Refutation in the Gospel of Luke Author(s): BRUEHLER, Bart B. Journal: Biblica Volume: 104 Issue: 1 Date: 2023 Pages: 57-77 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.104.1.3291714 Abstract : Luke’s Gospel displays the influence of the exercises of the progymnasmata, and Luke’s education probably included training in refutation. However, very little attention has been paid to the skill of refutation, which is relevant to instances of conflict and controversy in the Gospel. A survey of both more traditional and more edited material across the Gospel shows that the topics of refutation as presented in the progymnasmata illuminate the various ways that Luke portrays Jesus refuting his opponents. In particular, Luke presents Jesus using the topics of inexpediency, inconsistency, and self-contradiction to counter his opponents’ charges of inappropriateness. |
