Document Details : Title: Nesmin, Priest of Akhmim Subtitle: A Study of his Coffin and Mummy Cartonnage at RISD Museum (RI) Author(s): BAUMANN, Stefan Journal: Revue d'Égyptologie Volume: 72 Date: 2022 Pages: 1-63 DOI: 10.2143/RE.72.0.3291585 Abstract : This paper studies the particularly well-crafted coffin and mummy cartonnage of Nesmin (RISD Museum 38.206), who served as semati-priest, second god’s servant of Min, and god’s servant of Khonsu in the city of Akhmim during the Ptolemaic Period. In addition to an edition of the inscriptions, this contribution offers a philological and historical commentary, together with analysis of the pictorial elements and the decorative process. Moreover, it traces the history of the assemblage’s acquisition and the reputation it garnered in the 19th century as a supposedly cursed relic of ancient Egypt, in order to illustrate the meaning of Egyptian antiquities for society in that era. Cet article étudie le cercueil et le cartonnage de la momie particulièrement raffinés de Nesmin (RISD Museum 38.206), qui servit comme prêtre-semati, deuxième prêtre de Min et prêtre de Khonsou dans la ville d’Akhmim pendant la période ptolémaïque. Outre l’édition des inscriptions, cette contribution propose un commentaire philologique et historique, ainsi qu’une analyse des éléments picturaux et de l’élaboration du décor. Elle retrace aussi l’histoire de l’acquisition de l’ensemble et la réputation qu’il a acquise au XIXe siècle en tant que vestige virtuellement maudit de l’Égypte ancienne, afin d’illustrer la perception des antiquités égyptiennes dans la société de cette époque. |
