The central question is simple: what is the difference between calling someone a 'brother' and calling someone a 'friend'? By extension, should Christians think about their relationships with non-Christians as oriented toward fraternity, toward friendship, or both? This article will examine three sets of data: first, the speeches and homilies of Pope Francis at ecumenical and interreligious encounters; second, the Document on Human Fraternity; third and finally, the encyclical Fratelli Tutti, suggesting certain hypotheses about why Pope Francis in recent years has preferred 'brotherhood' in his discussion of interreligious relationships, particularly with Muslims. |
