I consider three ways in which reading the Bible and the Qur'ān together can help in navigating the ambiguity inherent in the narrative: the Bible disambiguating the Qur'ān; the Qur'ān shedding light on possible solutions to Biblical ambiguity; and parallel disambiguation wherein both the Bible and the Qur᾿ān are almost equally ambiguous on the same episodes but can, nonetheless, illuminate each other’s ambiguity. By revisiting this story from the perspective of inter-scriptural exegesis, I attempt to show the exegetical utility of this comparative reading and, ultimately, to bring such reading to bear on current methods of inter-religious dialogue. |
