Document Details : Title: Renewing the Whole of Christian Theology Subtitle: Exploring the Implications of the Church's Renewed Understanding of the Jewish People Author(s): VETÖ, Etienne Journal: Marriage, Families & Spirituality Volume: 28 Issue: 2 Date: 2022 Pages: 257-271 DOI: 10.2143/INT.28.2.3291374 Abstract : In the past decades the Catholic Church and many Christian denominations have profoundly reassessed their understanding of the Jewish people, underlining the permanence of the 'Old Covenant' and their ongoing role in salvation history. However, the full implications of this have not yet been truly perceived. This paper argues that it not only adds a theme to Christian theology but renews the whole of systematic theology. In a programmatic way it explores this renewal in ecclesiology (who are the 'people of God'?), sacramental theology (in what 'people of God' do the sacraments of initiation introduce the faithful), Christology and soteriology (Christ makes Gentiles into 'children of Abraham') and the doctrine of God (is the 'God of Israel' Jesus prayed to the 'whole Trinity' or the Father?).
