Document Details : Title: Die Verwendungsweise der griechischen Koranübersetzung durch Niketas von Byzanz Author(s): ULBRICHT, Manolis Journal: Byzantion Volume: 92 Date: 2022 Pages: 491-519 DOI: 10.2143/BYZ.92.0.3291261 Abstract : The article sheds light on the methods used by Nicetas of Byzantium (9th century) to utilize the Greek translation of the Qur᾿ān in his Refutation of the Qur᾿ān. The research results presented here are based on a full analysis of all Qur᾿ānic fragments preserved in Nicetas’ anti-Islamic polemic and on a philological and contextual comparison of the Greek translation as preserved in the Vat. gr. 681 with all Qur᾿ānic readings. It shows that specific alterations of the Arabic Qur᾿ān in its Greek translation, as handed down in Nicetas’ work, repeatedly recur with the same patterns and within similar contexts. All of them facilitate polemics against the Qur᾿ān as a holy scripture and are easily to achieve without changing the formulations of the translation as such. The paper presents different categories of modifications with respect to the Arabic Qur᾿ān, such as the combination of verses, exclusion of key words, interpretation of Qur᾿ānic passages, etc., which are believed to go back to Nicetas while using the nowadays lost Greek translation of the Qur᾿ān. |
