Document Details : Title: A Trifle, Reprised Subtitle: British Library School Tablet Add MS 34186(1)(2) Author(s): JOHNSON, William A. Journal: Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists Volume: 59 Date: 2022 Pages: 205-220 DOI: 10.2143/BASP.59.0.3290993 Abstract : Detailed investigation of two schoolroom tablets in the British Library reveal additional aspects of the life story of these artifacts. Earlier publications did not mention the reverse sides of the two tablets, one of which has legible writing. Legible writing at the bottom of MS 34186(1) has also not been previously reported, nor have the partial erasures on both tablets which are part of their story. The analysis brings to light several interesting details about teacher-student interactions, shows the presence of trisyllabic as well as disyllabic syllabification exercise, and challenges the view that the use of double guidelines for elementary copying exercises is established ancient practice. |
