Although a previous study stated that the Masceroen-episode in Jacob van Maerlant’s Graal-Merlijn was based on its Middle Dutch counterpart Dit es Maskeroen, a comparison with the Latin Mascaron-Fassung (MF) suggests the Middle Dutch texts descend independently from Latin, presumably from a textual predecessor of MF which can be reconstructed at a macro level (MF*). This insight does not directly affect the recent hypothesis that the fourteenth-century author Lodewijk van Velthem is responsible for the (complete) insertion of the Masceroen-episode in Maerlant’s original Graal-Merlijn (ca. 1261), but strictly speaking it remains possible that Maerlant inserted the episode and Velthem only edited the last part. However, a qualitative re-exploration of the authorial issue provides many arguments in favour of Velthem being responsible for the (entire) interpolation. |
