Document Details : Title: Armenian Colophons on the Takeover of Sis (1375) Author(s): GRIGORYAN SAVARY, Gohar Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 40 Date: 2021 Pages: 85-99 DOI: 10.2143/REA.40.0.3290110 Abstract : In April 1375 the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia ceased to exist as a state. Among Christian sources describing this crucial event, the principal one is Jean Dardel’s Chronique d’Arménie, composed several years after the kingdom’s fall. This short article furnishes the texts and translations of several manuscript colophons, which provide a window into the situation at Sis and the experience of its inhabitants who either witnessed the takeover of the Armenian capital or heard about it from an eyewitness. My rationale in choosing the colophon texts gathered here is due to their closeness to the historical event, both temporally and geographically. While Dardel offers a broad overview of the events of 1375, these minor texts describe the same events from another, more socially instructive angle, giving us the opportunity to imagine certain realities of the time not discussed in the chronicle. |
