Document Details : Title: The Sacred Law from Tortora Author(s): CALABRESE, Matteo Journal: Latomus Volume: 80 Issue: 2 Date: 2021 Pages: 281-339 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.80.2.3289770 Abstract : Datable between the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 5th century B.C., the inscription from Tortora is an Oenotrian text, whose reconstruction and interpretation represent a very challenging task. The goal of this paper is to provide a detailed analysis of the text, which took as a starting point the proposals made by Paolo Poccetti in the edition he published with Maria Letizia Lazzarini in 2001, but which often went beyond his conclusions, mainly by means of comparison with other Italic documents (especially the Iguvine Tables). The analysis of the inscription suggests that it is a sacred law, whose content can be divided into two sections: the former (from line A-1 to A-3) introduces the text of a decree about the sacrifice of a yearling lamb, while the latter (from A-4 to C-4) corresponds to the text of the decree itself containing three prohibitions. |
