Document Details : Title: Augustine's Sermo 336 for the Dedication of a Church Subtitle: A Study of its Contents, Manuscript Transmission, and Editorial History, with a New Critical Edition Author(s): PARTOENS, Gert Journal: Recherches de Théologie et Philosophie Médiévales Volume: 88 Issue: 1 Date: 2021 Pages: 1-45 DOI: 10.2143/RTPM.88.1.3289283 Abstract : This article focuses on an incompletely preserved sermon for a church dedication by Augustinus of Hippo (s. 336). After a short discussion of the Church Father’ homilies for church dedications in general and a detailed structural analysis of s. 336, it is shown that the latter homily was transmitted to us in two versions: an incomplete version that predates the middle of the eighth century and that is found in a series of French homiliaries, and an adaptation of this incomplete version that was produced in the tenth century at the latest and has been preserved uniquely in Italian sources. After a systematic overview of the sermon’s complex editorial history, a critical edition is offered of the sermon’s oldest preserved version. |
