Lohfink proposed translating mar in Qoh 7,26 as 'strong' rather than 'bitter'. The majority of scholars did not follow him but continued to take the traditional view that mar means bitter here and have consequently concluded that Qoheleth was a misogynist. This article gives additional arguments (on the basis of biblical and extrabiblical parallels) in support of Lohfink’s theory. |
