Whereas in Hellenistic discourse parrhesiastic speech normally operates on the horizontal axis, that is, between the one who speaks freely and his or her interlocutor, here it obtains in the one-to-one encounter of the human being with God. Foucault’s claim is discussed with reference both to the Greek translation, and to its larger cultural context. Exegetical conclusions are drawn. |
