Document Details : Title: From Text to Discourse Subtitle: Parrhesiastic Speech in Greek Job Author(s): BOYD-TAYLOR, Cameron Journal: Journal of Septuagint and Cognate Studies Volume: 53 Date: 2020 Pages: 133-144 DOI: 10.2143/JSCS.53.0.3289029 Abstract : Michel Foucault saw evidence in Greek Job 22.26 for a shift in discursive practice, one witnessed by a number of other Greco-Jewish sources. Whereas in Hellenistic discourse parrhesiastic speech normally operates on the horizontal axis, that is, between the one who speaks freely and his or her interlocutor, here it obtains in the one-to-one encounter of the human being with God. Foucault’s claim is discussed with reference both to the Greek translation, and to its larger cultural context. Exegetical conclusions are drawn. |
