In this article, I interrelate these themes and analyze their relation to the female roles of mediatrix and imitator of Christ based on the concept of interspace. Their exclusion from social and divine communities led to the pain needed to mimic and access Christ’s salvific pain. Using a theological and textual analysis of the vitae of the Holy Women of Liège, I show how the interrelated themes are contextualized in a personalized way in the saintly performance and text of the Women. I argue that the Women should not be reduced to one homogeneous monolithic group, or one particular image of female sanctity, and that they should be considered theologians in their own right – theologians that take different positions on an eschatological spectrum. |
