Welsch’s study of Ottoman scholarly practices integrated craft knowledge, such as the making of marbled paper, and the analysis of prior Turkish textual sources on the history of scholarship, as a unified enterprise. Although Welsch’s manuscript itself was eventually lost, it formed the nucleus of widespread collaborative research, spurring much correspondence and several responses. This collaboration offers a view of the intellectual geography of the period uniting practical and scholarly forms of knowledge and circulating across a network stretching from Augsburg to Istanbul and further afield to Aleppo. A study of the historia literaria Turcarum enriches our view of the development of the genre of historia literaria more generally. |
