Document Details : Title: Livia and Concordia in Tacitus' Annals Author(s): GILLESPIE, Caitlin Journal: Latomus Volume: 78 Issue: 3 Date: 2019 Pages: 621-652 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.78.3.3287365 Abstract : Material from Livia’s lifetime connects the first empress to the divine quality of Concordia. This article argues that Tacitus recognizes Livia’s influence in presenting an image of concordia to the Roman populace and responds to this public portrait in his Annals. Through criticizing those who imitate Livia directly and by transmitting contemporary opinions of Tiberius’ discordant relationship with his mother, Tacitus challenges Livia’s association with concordia. In her obituary, Tacitus creates an alternate monument to Livia’s memory. This obituary leads to larger considerations of Tacitus’ employment of Livia as an exemplum in his text. |
