Subtitle: La historia militar de un conflicto cultural Author(s): PRIETO IOMMI, Juan Pablo Journal: Latomus Volume: 78 Issue: 2 Date: 2019 Pages: 397-427 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.78.2.3287058 Abstract : Relying on a critical analysis of the data available on the Battle of Cynoscephalae in 197 BC, this paper aims to trace back the origin of the claims and quarrels which embittered the relations between Romans and Aetolians throughout the 2nd century BC. A close examination of the prejudices of ancient authors, of the stereotypes of modern academic research, and of the information we may have about purely military aspects, leads us to the conclusion that neither Romans nor Aetolians acted in bad faith toward each other when emphasizing their own crucial role in this decisive battle. Both were reasoning in accordance with their own socio-military system of values, which made them unable to understand or fully comprehend that of their ally. |
