Journal: Biblica Volume: 100 Issue: 2 Date: 2019 Pages: 187-206 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.100.2.3286598 Abstract : Biblical Hebrew conditionals have traditionally been analyzed utilizing a framework based on the construed degree of hypotheticality of the protasis. Consequently, functionally distinct conditionals have been comingled within single categories, which in turn have been used to draw conclusions regarding verb usage. The results have been unenlightening. This paper examines the hypothesis that the application of a cognitive-domain-based analytical framework yields a more satisfying account of Biblical Hebrew אם-conditionals. Verb use is revealed to be systematic and predictable utilizing this framework. |
