Document Details : Title: Vergillian Allusions in the Getica of Jordanes Author(s): VAN HOOF, Lieve Journal: Latomus Volume: 78 Issue: 1 Date: 2019 Pages: 170-185 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.78.1.3286526 Abstract : This article studies ten allusions to the poems of Vergil in the Getica of Jordanes, a work often said to reflect the low culture of its author. Bracketing the issue of the Getica’s dependency on Cassiodorus’ History of the Goths, it argues that the use made of allusions to Vergil is in line with contemporary literary practice. In several instances, the allusion is added to the source used at that point, whilst other examples show Jordanes attributing to the Goths the place occupied by the Romans in the Aeneid. The absence of such allusions in Jordanes’ other work, the Romana, reflects a generic difference: in contrast to the breuiarium that is the Romana, the Getica is composed in a more elaborated style. |
