Document Details : Title: Early Arabic Studies in Western Europe Subtitle: Letters from Marcus Welser to Marquard Freher, 1611-1612, on Arabic Epigraphy Author(s): BOTLEY, Paul Journal: Lias Volume: 45 Issue: 2 Date: 2018 Pages: 223-239 DOI: 10.2143/LIAS.45.2.3286103 Abstract : The article provides annotated Latin texts, and modern English translations, of two previously unpublished letters from Marcus Welser to Marquard Freher. The letters, dated 1611 and 1612, show two well-connected German scholars attempting to make use of Arabic inscriptions for their historical research. The letters throw light on Freher’s lost work on coinage, Pomponius, and on the Arabic learning of Bernardino Baldi, Jakob Christmann, Isaac Casaubon and Diego de Urrea. |
