This article discusses two aspects of Filelfo’s modus operandi that explain the vastness of his œuvre, namely his habit of bringing together, discussing, and combining various doctrines in his writings on the one hand and of recycling his own material throughout his career on the other hand. As a case study, the article focuses on the interpretation of the concepts of reason, wisdom, and knowledge that this prominent Italian humanist put forward in his many consolatory writings on bereavement. After an introduction devoted to the generic characterization of those writings, Filelfo’s use of exhortatio ad rationem in his consolations is presented. Subsequently, the article examines the humanist’s analysis and use of the concepts of sapientia, prudentia, and scientia in his theoretical writings as well as in his consolations. A final section deals with the way Filelfo accommodated his consolations to his addressees’ erudition. |
