Document Details : Title: La oposición ὄναρ - ὕπαρ en los θαύματα bizantinos Author(s): NARRO, Ángel Journal: Byzantion Volume: 88 Date: 2018 Pages: 345-363 DOI: 10.2143/BYZ.88.0.3285456 Abstract : In many descriptions of dream visions of Saints in Byzantine hagiography an allusion appears to consider the scene a mere dream (ὄναρ) or rather a real vision (ὕπαρ). Even though this opposition was inherited from classical literature – it was created in Homeric poetry – its use was further developed in Byzantine Saints’ lives and collections of miracles as a rhetorical device to describe a nightly apparition of a Saint. Our article aims to analyse the three different formulae used to express the opposition between the two terms (ὕπαρ, οὐκ ὄναρ / οὐκ ὄναρ, ἀλλ’ ὕπαρ / ὄναρ, μᾶλλον ὕπαρ) and also the different contexts in which these formulae are found. |
