The μιλιαρήσιον of Leo III set the standard for the silver coinage of Byzantine Empire until the reform of Basil I: did Leo just copy Arab dirham? This paper explores the relationship between both denominations and their Late Ancient forebears in order to give new perspectives on the actual roots of Byzantine μιλιαρήσια. |
