Document Details : Title: The Commentary on Job of Step'anos of Siwnik' and its Sources Author(s): PAPAZIAN, Michael Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 130 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2017 Pages: 343-363 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.130.3.3259745 Abstract : This article aims to contribute to the study of the Armenian tradition of biblical exegesis by examining the fragmentary remains of a commentary on the book of Job that was composed in the eighth century by the Armenian bishop and exegete Step‘anos of Siwnik‘. The focus is on the sources and methods that Step‘anos used. The commentary’s main sources are Olympiodorus’ commentary on Job as well as a Greek version of the Physiologus. The methodology of the Armenian Job commentary is similar to that of Step‘anos’ commentary on the Gospels. These common features give further support for the general Alexandrian orientation of Step‘anos’ exegesis. |
