Document Details : Title: Dominicus De Petter, O.P., a Forgotten Victim of the Crisis Caused by the 'Nouvelle Théologie'? Author(s): BOSSCHAERT, Dries Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 93 Issue: 4 Date: 2017 Pages: 633-656 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.93.4.3256943 Abstract : The present contribution seeks to answer the question of whether or not the Belgian philosopher Dominicus De Petter O.P. (1905-1971) was a victim of the crisis surrounding the nouvelle théologie. Relying upon a mixture of archival sources and secondary literature, this work investigates the measures taken against De Petter by his Magister General in 1942. Were they caused by his philosophical ideas or by the condemnation of Marie-Dominique Chenu and Louis Charlier? The answer to this question is developed by examining the intellectual origins of De Petter’s Neo-Thomist ideology in Leuven, the foundation of the journal Tijdschrift voor Filosofie [Journal of Philosophy], his controversy with Vincent Kuiper O.P., and the harsh measures implemented by Martin Stanislas Gillet, his Magister General, in 1942. |
