Document Details : Title: The Storms in Theodoros Daphnopates (Ep. 36), Symeon Metaphrastes (BHG 1878) and Achilles Tatius (3.1.1-5.6) Author(s): TRZASKOMA, Stephen M. Journal: Byzantion Volume: 87 Date: 2017 Pages: 375-386 DOI: 10.2143/BYZ.87.0.3256912 Abstract : This article confirms the intertextual relationship between Achilles Tatius’ 2nd-century novel Leukippe and Kleitophon and Daphnopates’ 10th-century Epistle 37. More significantly, it explores the much richer and deeper connection between the early work of prose fiction and another letter from the same source, Epistle 36, contextualizing the reuse of Achilles Tatius’ description of a storm at sea through comparison with the 10th-century metaphrastic Life of St Xenophon’s incorporation of elements from the same episode into its narrative. |
