Dilthey’s and M. Scheler’s philosophical works, the same pattern can be found in their respective attempts to solve the traditional problem of the external world’s reality: the only access to reality is provided by an experience of the resistance of reality to the will. This paper highlights the thesis of resistance in the context of the Diltheyan epistemological program, most notably in its significance for designing an original concept of life-world. It examines the critical discussion of this thesis in Scheler’s late works, in the perspective both of a radicalized concept of resistance and of an increased consideration for the physiological dimension of the problem. More broadly, although rooted in an epistemological framework, this debate involves a renewed conception of the interlacing of spirit and nature in human beings: a philosophical-anthropological questioning, on the edge between life-philosophy and phenomenology. |
