Patristic exegesis was especially interested in the pronoun 'we': thus, Jesus says that he himself adores. Different analyses reinforce an intuition of the Alexandrian tradition: Jesus, who adores 'that which he knows', is in fact speaking here of his own adoration, thus initiating the prayer of the messianic time, 'the adoration of the Father in the Spirit and in truth'. His prayer as son is the foundation of Christian prayer, just as his sanctification is the foundation of the sanctification of believers (Jn 17,19). |
