Document Details : Title: Thee drinken na de dood? Subtitle: De opstanding in het werk van Max Beckmann en Stanley Spencer Author(s): SPIJKERBOER, Anne Marijke Journal: Tijdschrift voor Theologie Volume: 52 Issue: 2 Date: 2012 Pages: 141-155 DOI: 10.2143/TVT.52.2.3203348 Abstract : The author examines what viewers and readers see as the reciprocal operation between two large paintings by Max Beckmann and Stanley Spencer on resurrection and death and the corporality in the theological views on the resurrection of the dead. Beckmann and Spencer both underwent major artistic and personal transformations after their experience as medics in the First World War. Neither belonged to a middle-class Christian church at that time. Their work is in the iconographic tradition of the resurrection of the dead as part of the Last Judgment, but at the same time displays the artistry and content of a totally new vision. Their work raises the question of the role of corporality. Beckmann’s work shows only broken bodies. Spencer’s work shows an idyllic, surrealist return to older values like compassion, bed making and serving tea at the resurrection. |
