Subtitle: In gesprek met hedendaagse en Bijbelse rouwrituelen Author(s): QUARTIER, Thomas , VAN HECKE, Pierre Journal: Tijdschrift voor Theologie Volume: 52 Issue: 2 Date: 2012 Pages: 125-140 DOI: 10.2143/TVT.52.2.3203347 Abstract : Since the turn of the century, many Dutch cemeteries have witnessed new rituals as part of a project called ‘Allerzielen Alom’ (All Saints Everywhere). Artists and not the churches usually design these rituals. This article identifies the characteristics of these new rituals and confronts them with the biblical views on mourning rituals that are the foundation for the traditional Christian repertory. In some ways the new rituals seem fundamentally distant from Christian, Biblical views on death and mourning. In other ways, these new rituals, rooted in an explicitly post-Christian society, are most certainly linked to Christian tradition. The very fact that they take place on All Saints is the most obvious clue. In confronting the modern repertory with the Biblical witnesses, we seek guidance from three questions: 1. What is the position of the deceased in these new rituals? How is he/she depicted? 2. What is the social context of those grieving? How can they truly lay someone to rest? 3. What interpretations do these rituals give to life after death? Do they show any particular view of God? |
